IN APRIL 1861 GENERAL LEWIS WALLACE,
THE AUTHOR OF BEN HUR, THEN A COLONEL,
UNIFORMED WITH THE GOVERNOR'S CON-
SENT, A THOUSAND TROOPS. THESE TROOPS
IN THEIR NEW ZOUAVE UNIFORMS WERE
PARADED AND GAVE THE PUBLIC THE FIRST
DRESS-PARADE BY A FULL REGIMENT HELD
IN THE LIMITS OF THE STATE OF INDIANA
